Did You Know? One of the most common cause of delirium is a urinary tract infection!

“Up to one-third of elderly patients hospitalized with UTIs can experience some degree of confusion and reduced awareness of their surroundings”
— Shouri Lahiri, MD, director of the Neurosciences Critical Care Unit and Neurocritical Care Research at Cedars-Sinai

Delirium is a sudden change in the brain that causes emotional disturbance and confusion.

Urinary Tract Infection (UTI) is an infection to any of your urinary system, that includes urethra, ureter, bladder and kidneys. Women and the elderly are at greater risk of developing UTIs.

The causal link between UTIs and delirium is still being studied.
How to Prevent UTIs

  • proper hydration

  • Wiping from front to back

  • proper catheter care if you are using a catheter

Regular homecare visits can help prevent delirium in vulnerable populations.
